Sunset at Cramond
Spring in Edinburgh
Photos from a short walk down the Mound and through Princes Street Gardens on a Spring morning.
Snow on the Pentlands
The snow has perhaps outstayed its welcome this year, but it has resulted in some good Pentland Hills photo opportunities…

HDR snow in Princes St Gardens
It’s not often that the snow lies in the centre of Edinburgh, and – whilst I didn’t have a lot of time to take advantage of it – I did manage to get some shots of the Castle and Princes Street Gardens.
The light was fading, and the sun was beginning to set, casting a very weak golden light. Ideal for HDR.
All these shots are high dynamic range, created from three hand-held shots taken at different exposures then blended together to create the distinctive HDR look.
I think the processing suits the subject well, but you can make up your own mind here. (Click on any image to see the shots full-size).
North Berwick in October
A visit to North Berwick in East Lothian in October: the chances of blue skies and sunshine were always going to be slim…
However, seascapes and beach scenes tend to be photogenic no matter what the conditions, so these shots of North Berwick and the islands in the Firth of Forth in the cold and wind were still dramatic…
Autumn projects
Both my new projects are well underway now. Victorian Edinburgh is an architecture and urban detail focused project concentrating on the city’s buildings from that era; the forthcoming Edinburgh’s Fringe is a portrait-based project highlighting the wealth of Edinburgh’s creative (and all year round) talent.
Researching the legacy of the Victorian era is proving interesting, and as it is such a relatively recent period, there’s a huge number of subjects in the city – from the grand glasshouses of the Botanics to the tenements of Marchmont & Leith. This one is likely to run for quite some time.
Equally likely to be long-lived is Edinburgh’s Fringe. I’m fortunate to have a large number of contacts working in theatre, music, cabaret and the arts, and the project is designed to show the city is a permanent creative hotspot – not just in August.
The first couple of portraits will be up soon; in the meantime, here’s a few shots of the Victorian subjects, and a couple of location shots from the first Edinburgh’s Fringe shoot.
And I’m still keeping the Statues of Edinburgh project going.
